Re: Proposed Supplement to Military Pay
Attached for formal review are the proposed Guidelines on Supplement to Military Pay. The guidelines would implement a supplement to the military pay of University employees who volunteer or are called to active military duty during the Enduring Freedom Campaign. The supplement would consist of the difference between the employee's University pay and military pay and would extend for a period of 180 calendar days, or until the predetermined separation date of an employee's University appointment, whichever comes first.
Under current staff and academic personnel policies, employees who have completed 12 months of continuous University service receive their regular University pay for the first 30 calendar days of military duty in a fiscal year. Because it is the desire of the University of California to assist to the extent possible its employees who are called to active military duty during the Enduring Freedom Campaign, the University is proposing that in addition to the 30 days pay, employees who enlist or who are called for active military duty during this Campaign be compensated for the difference between their University base pay and their military pay and allowances for a period not to exceed 180 calendar days, or until the predetermined separation date of an employee's University appointment, whichever comes first. The supplement to military pay is similar to the supplement provided during the Gulf War and will begin on the first day of unpaid military leave.
Because the University desires that affected employees receive their first payments as soon as possible, we are requesting an expedited review. Please make this proposed policy available to your faculty and all interested parties for comment. The proposal and proposed implementation guidelines are available online at:
