GUIDELINES FOR IMPLEMENTATION OF THE EXTRA SHIFT DIFFERENTIAL PLAN

November 12, 2000 – April 1, 2001

  1. GENERAL CONDITIONS
    1. The Extra Shift Differential plan ("extra shift differential") covers designated bargaining unit Nurses employed at UCLA Healthcare.
    2. The plan shall commence on November 12, 2000 and conclude April 1, 2001.
  1. ELIGIBILITY

To be eligible to earn the extra shift differential, the Nurse must fulfill the following conditions:

    1. Any and all qualifying shifts, as defined in Sections B.3. and B.4., below, must be worked in a Registered Nurse bargaining unit classification at UCLA Healthcare, including the Westwood Hospital, Santa Monica Hospital and/or the Neuropsychiatric Hospital.
    2. The extra shift must be in providing direct patient care in the Medical Centers.
    3. The Nurse must actually work or be on pay status as defined in Section C. below, within the quadri-weekly period. Qualification for and calculation of the extra shift differential is based on shifts worked in excess of appointment percentage. Time on paid sick leave does not count as time on pay status for the purpose of calculating the extra shift differential.
    4. The Nurse must actually work a minimum of six (6) hours of the extra shift, except as provided in Section D., below. Qualifying time worked will be determined by the designated extra shift assignment. No partial extra shift differential payments will be made.
    5. The Nurse must sign up to participate with the Unit Director of his/her home unit or the Staffing Coordinator in the Department of Nursing at the specific hospital prior to working any extra shift assignments. The Nurse is responsible for providing evidence of current licensure and competencies.
    6. The Nurse may be in a casual, limited, career or per diem appointment.

 

 

  1. DEFINITIONS
  2. For the 12-hour shift RN, the Extra Shift Differential shall be paid:

    Appointment <60% – all designated shifts in excess of 8 shifts during the quadri-weekly cycle.

    Appointment >60%--<100% – all designated shifts in excess of 12 shifts during the quadri-weekly cycle.

    All Appointments All designated shifts in excess of 13 shifts during the quadri-weekly cycle.

    For the 10-hour shift RN, the Extra Shift Differential shall be paid:

    Appointment <50% – all designated shifts in excess of 8 shifts during the quadri-weekly cycle.

    Appointment >50%--<100% – all designated shifts in excess of 12 shifts during the quadri-weekly cycle.

    All appointments -- All designated shifts in excess of 16 shifts during the quadri-weekly cycle.

    For the 8 - hour shift RN, the Extra Shift Differential shall be paid:

    Appointment <60% – all designated shifts in excess of 12 shifts during the quadri-weekly cycle.

    Appointment >60%--<100% – all designated shifts in excess of 16 shifts during the quadri-weekly cycle.

    All appointments -- All designated shifts in excess of 20 shifts during the quadri-weekly cycle.

  3. SCHEDULING
    1. In the event of a change in workload, which would result in a nurse who is working an extra shift to actually work less than six (6) hours of that shift, the University may assign or reassign the Nurse during the extra shift. If the University is unable to reassign the Nurse, he/she will receive the full extra shift differential payment.
    2. If the Nurse refuses the assignment or reassignment, no extra shift differential monies will be paid to the Nurse.
  1. COMPENSATION

Provided that the Nurse meets the eligibility requirements in Section B., above, he/she will be paid the extra shift differential in the amount listed in the attachment, for any and all extra shifts actually worked for (6) hours or more in excess of the nurse’s appointment percentage. In addition:

    1. The Nurse will receive his/her regular rate of pay for all extra shifts actually worked in excess of full time, including premium overtime, consecutive shift payment (if applicable), shift differential, weekend differential, holiday pay (if applicable), premium after 8, 10, 12 hour shift, charge nurse differential, premium upon return from on-call status.
    2. When the nurse works an extra shift in a cost center other than his/her home cost center or shift other than the nurse’s regular hour base, prior approval to work an extra shift must be obtained from the appropriate supervisor(s).
    3. Benefits shall be earned based on existing University practice and applicable contract language. The extra shift differential is not intended to add to, delete from, or otherwise modify accrual of benefits or participation in the University of California benefit programs.
